Great to see STEM being applied in multiple ways at Elisabeth Murdoch College!

Bernd Meyer, Deputy Dean (Education) at Monash joined me on a tour that began with where we should always begin – with the Students.

We were presented with some amazing inventions Year 7 students had made for their Inventors night. All incorporated a microbit (Similar to an Arduino or Raspberry Pi) Their creations were made in teams and showcased why STEM is such a great platform to develop interpersonal skills such as teamwork and collaboration at the same time as teaching technical skills. There was a great deal of undeniable problem solving required evident in the work showcased.

After this on our way to the Agriculture Centre, we stopped by the Technology Department to see awards being made for the inventors night with the school’s laser cutter. Elisabeth Murdoch College has multiple CNC routers as well that allow students to best understand the future of advanced manufacturing.

Then what a treat to meet with Andrew and Kyle to see what they’re doing in Ag Tech. Andrew established the farm in 1985. He continually innovates, using the most up to date technology. He is passionate about Ag Science and he engages the students to come up with solutions using Technology to enhance their understanding of Agriculture. Never content to stay with the status quo Andrew shared his vision for employing more technology to enhance what they do in Agriculture. Essentially this explores how Internet of Things (IOT) could impact the way we do farming in the future. Great work EMC!
